Kala Mandali which literally means "Arts Circle", is a voluntary non-profit organization representing "Friends of South Asian Arts and Culture at the University of Iowa". The organization was founded in 1985 in Iowa City, Iowa to promote South Asian arts and culture in and around Iowa City. It is affiliated to the South Asian Studies Program of the University of Iowa and the University of Iowa Foundation. Promotion of South Asian arts and enrichment of curriculum of the Department of Asian Languages and Literature at the University of Iowa have been the driving forces behind the foundation and ongoing activities of Kala Mandali.
Events and activities of Kala Mandali are planned by an executive board of Kala Mandali, guided by the constitutional objectives of Kala Mandali, availability of funding, and interests of the majority of the Kala Mandali members. The activities are implemented by the Board working in collaboration with institutional support groups and individual volunteers dedicated to the promotion of South Asian arts and culture.
