Technical FAQs

I currently have a subdomain website hosted by another ISP. What exactly would I need to do to have a new domain registered and forwarded to that site? If I buy the domain in GlobalFront's site, would I still have to contact my existing ISP for anything related to the new domain?

You would need to order "ND1 or ND2 Forwarding Services" in our web site. Once we receive your order and payment, we will register the domain with the registrant information provided by your and forward the domain to your existing site. Your domain will be active within 24-72 hours. You will be able to use GlobalFront's Global Domain Control Panel to manage forwarding for the domain on your own without contacting your ISP. URL forwarding will work provided you have a valid URL for your current website hosted with any ISP. Emails coming to your domain will be automatically forwarded by our server(s) to your existing email account(s). As the new domain will be using GlobalFront's nameservers, DNS and forwarding services, you won't need to contact your existing ISP for any service related to the new domain.

How do I verify the registrant and contact information for an existing domain?

To instantly check the registrant and contact information for an existing domain, please visit our Domain Lookup Page, enter your domain name, and click on "Check Domain" button. Once our lookup script reports the domain as "not available" for registration, click on the "More Information" button and the script will automatically locate and display the Registrant and Contact information for your domain from your registry's database! Our proprietary domain lookup script works fine for all .com, .net and .org domains, no matter where you registered your domain.

My domain is currently forwarded to another URL. Would my current URL forwarding be down during the domain move?

No. When we process your order and send you login information in our server, you will be able to login to Global Domain Control Panel and setup or verify the target URL and email forwarding settings for your domain in our server BEFORE you modify nameservers of your domain with your registry. If you specify the target URL and catchall forwarding address in our order form, then we pre-setup those for you. To keep your domain move transparent to your web site visitors, you would need to continue to have the DNS service for your domain with your current provider for at least 72 hours after you modify the domain with our nameserver information. Once the domain move has been completed, you can cancel the DNS service from your previous ISP.

I currently have catch-all email forwarding for my domain. Would I miss incoming messages during domain move?

No. If you follow the instructions for the previous FAQ, then there will be no interruption of emails during your domain move or domain modification. Please make sure to keep the service with your current provider for at least 72 hours after the domain modification. This is the standard propagation time for InterNIC updates, and during this transition, ISPs around the world may route email messages for your domain either to your old ISP's mail server or to our mail server, depending on when any particular ISP's local DNS settings reflect InterNIC changes.

What is a nameserver?

A nameserver is a network connected computer that has the software to accept domain name queries, translate the domain names into the IP addresses for the domains, and return the ip addresses to network queries.

Do I need DNS service for my domain to work?

Yes. DNS service is required for registration and functioning of domain names. DNS service resolves the domain name to the appropriate host IP address so that the domain responds to network requests, including browser requests. DNS also defines the mail, ftp and any other hosts for a domain name.

What DNS information will be used to register my domain?

Since we use multiple DNS servers, it may vary depending on what service you are ordering. For domain forwarding services, our DNS servers use the following nameserver names and IP addresses. (Note: if you are a reseller and would like to use anonymous nameservers, then please note that we offer semi-anonymous nameservers for free, and also offer private-branded virtual nameservers for a nominal fee. Please visit our Reseller FAQs page or contact us at sales@globalfront.com for more information if you are a reseller).

How fast and reliable are your network connections?

Our servers are connected to the internet with redundant and fast network connections in multiple geographically separate redundant data centers in USA. Our network connections are monitored 24 hours a day and we guarantee 99.99 percent uptime for all of our domain and hosting services.

Do you support European or Asian domains (e.g., .it, .nl, .be, .fr or .in)?

Yes. We currently host domains from many foreign countries, from 5 continents. For foreign domain names, we setup the DNS and provide you nameservers and other relevant information, so you can register the domain directly with your registry.

I have a .tv domain. Do you support them?

Yes. We already have clients using DNS service for .tv domains in our server. Our system can support any TLD extension.

Can I use external nameserver information to register or update my domains?

Yes, you can. However, please note that GlobalFront's URL, IP and email forwarding services will only work when the domain is using our nameserver information. If you use nameservers from your ISP or webhost, then your ISP or webhost would need to have DNS for the domain setup in their server(s) for the domain to work.

How much time would it take for the domain forwarding to start working for my domain?

We process domain service orders received during business days within 0 to 6 hours. If the order is for an existing domain and you will be modifying the domain yourself, then we process it faster. If you ordered a new domain name or you request for help in domain modification then it may take upto 12 hours for us to process your order. Once your domain has been registered or modified with a registry, it takes upto 24-72 hours for the domain to be functional worldwide. This is due to propagation of InterNIC updates across the internet and depends on how frequently various ISPs update their local DNS table. In the US, generally it takes less than 24-48 hours.

I already registered my domain through GlobalFront. How do I get a website from GlobalFront for the domain?

If you already registered your domain through GlobalFront and are planning to have a website now, then you would need to order a virtual hosting or virtual server account from GlobalFront. With a hosting account, you will be able to publish and update your website in our server 24 hours a day. Please visit our web hosting service pages for more information on features and prices for our web hosting accounts. Our Value virtual hosting accounts cost as low as about $6.00 per month. When we setup your virtual hosting or virtual server account, we will make the necessary changes in our DNS server(s) so your domain points to the hosting account that you order from us.

I already registered my domain through GlobalFront. How can I use the domain for a hosting account that I buy from another company or webhost?

If you purchase a hosting account from another ISP or webhost, then the ISP or webhost would setup your domain in their DNS servers and would provide you with at least 2 nameservers. You would need to update nameservers for your domain with the new nameservers provided by your ISP or webhost. To do this, please log into Global Domain Control Panel, click on "Nameservers" button, select "Edit/Update Nameservers" option, and enter nameservers provided by the ISP or web host you are moving your domain to. Please note that domain modification with nameservers from other ISP or web host will deactivate GlobalFront's DNS, forwarding or hosting services, and the new ISP or web host will be responsible for resolution of your domain name. Our domain registration service will still continue as long as you renew your domain by paying the domain registry fee to GlobalFront before the registration renewal due date.

Whom do I contact for support questions? What are your support hours?

For technical questions, please contact support@globalfront.com. For domain services, we offer technical support by email from 8 AM to 11 PM, Central Standard Time (US) during regular business days. Weekend support hours may vary. On average, we answer 80 percent of support questions in less than 4 hours.
